What an Inclinometer Casing Consists Of:
An inclinometer casing consists of sections of ABS plastic casing, which has four perpendicular grooves and the associated plastic couplings that have four guide grooves on the inside and two drilling guide holes on the outside at each end.
2 Methods of Attaching Couplings
There are two methods of attaching the couplings:
- The first uses rivets and the tools required for this installation include a hand drill with a one-eighth inch bit, a rivet gun, and one-eighth inch medium sized rivets.
- The second method uses self tapping screws and requires the following: a hand drill with a Phillips head bit and one-eighth inch small self tapping screws. Sealing type, approximately four inches per joint is required to seal the joint. Duct type may then be used to protect the sealing tape.
Installing an Inclinometer Using Rivets
To install using rivets, simply insert the casing into the coupling like so. Use a hand drill to make a hole in the casing through the guide holes present in the coupling. Insert a one-eighth inch rivet into the rivet gun and pop a rivet into the hole.
Installing an Inclinometer Using Self Tapping Screws
The alternative method is to install using self tapping screws. To demonstrate this, I will change the bit to the Phillips head. Insert the screws into the guide holes, then secure the screws into the casing. The joint must then be sealed so as to prevent the ingress of grout into the casing. Both the joint and the riveted screw holes must be sealed.
4 Inches of Sealing Type
I will show this now using four inches of sealing type. However other types may be used depending on your preference. Wrap the sealing type around the joint several times to ensure a watertight seal.
Be sure to cover the rivets or screws to avoid any ingress of grout into the casing. You may also cover the sealing type with duct tape to protect the seal. On site we recommend that each length of casing be fitted with a coupling prior to installation in the borehole. This will save time and simplify your installation.
